Pros and Cons of Microwave Drawers in Kitchen

Microwave drawers are definitely cool, useful, and convenient, but they have their drawbacks as well. When you are designing your kitchen remodel, you may be considering a microwave drawer rather than a countertop microwave or over-the-range microwave. There are a variety of factors that may influence this decision such as available counter space, a desire to have a decorative range hood, and available cabinet storage space. Below, we take a closer look at the pros and cons of microwave drawers in the kitchen to help make it a bit easier to make a decision for your kitchen remodel.

Pros and Cons of Microwave Drawers in Kitchens

  • PRO: They save you counter space and improve the appearance of your kitchen. While microwaves are not unsightly, it is generally desirable to focus on the beautiful features of your kitchen design like cabinetry, countertops, and lighting. With a microwave drawer, you get the same functionality as a regular microwave without it being an eyesore in your kitchen or using up valuable counter space.
  • CON: Microwave drawers are costly. Many countertop and over-the-range microwaves can be purchased for under $500. Microwave drawers, however, tend to have an average cost of about $1000.
  • PRO: Microwaves are functionally easier to use, particularly for people with mobility restrictions. They are installed at a low height in lower cabinets so you do not have to lift up heavy or hot items to put them in a microwave. Additionally, if you have children, it is far easier for them to safely use the microwave when it is installed at a low height.
  • CON: Microwave drawers come in limited size options when compared with their more traditional counterparts. There are, generally speaking, two microwave drawer sizes – 24’’ and 30’’ so if you have specific dimension needs, the size limitations may pose a problem.
